A woman holds a pillow over her ears, trying to sleep while her husband snores.

Does your partner snore so loud that you can't sleep? Whether your sweetheart sounds like a buzzsaw, a pack of hornets or an angry bear waking up from hibernation, the result is the same. Poor sleep quality and a sense of frustration.

If your loved one is a snorer, you're probably not getting the great sleep you crave. And that's a problem because insomnia can affect both your health and your relationship.

Keep reading and we'll share some of our best tips for sleeping next to a snoring partner and how an adjustable bed can make all the difference.

How Snoring Can Affect Your Relationship

While snoring may not seem like a deal-breaker to some people, you can understand how disrupting it is night after night. In fact, one survey found that more than 60% of respondents said they were disturbed by their partner's snoring. No matter how much you love someone, it's pretty easy to get annoyed with them if they keep you up at night.

Not only does snoring affect your sleep quality, but it can also impact your relationship. Because, let's face it—tired people are grumpy and more likely to get into arguments.

How To Get Someone To Stop Snoring

If your partner is known to saw logs come bedtime, you're in good company. Johns Hopkins estimates that 45% of adults snore occasionally, and 25% are regular snorers. Snoring happens when airflow becomes obstructed while sleeping. This can be due to anything from specific health conditions like sleep apnea to your sleeping position.

But the bottom line is this: if your partner's snoring keeps you up at night, it's crucial to find a solution that works for both of you. Of course, there are all kinds of things for the snorer to try, such as:

  • Changing up their go-to sleep position
  • Using a humidifier
  • Using nose strips
  • Losing weight (if needed)

You can learn about tips for stopping storing here. But today, we're talking about what YOU, the non-snoring partner, can do to deal with the situation.

How to Deal with a Snoring Partner

There are several things that can help you sleep better when you're lying next to a snoring partner; take a look at our top suggestions below.

1. Try earplugs

Did you know that snoring can clock in at around 40-60 decibels (dB)? For context, a vacuum cleaner is usually 70 dB and a chainsaw is 100 dB.

One way to deal with this problem is to wear earplugs. Earplugs can help to block out the sound of snoring, allowing you to sleep more soundly. In addition, they can help reduce the risk of being woken up unexpectedly. If you are worried about wearing earplugs, don't be. There are many styles to choose from that are comfortable to wear and appropriate for bedtime.

2. Turn up the white noise

There's a reason why you'll always hear the radio on at the dentist's office. It's to drown out the unpleasant sound of drilling. Try this same strategy to make the sound of snoring less noticeable to you. Instead of the radio, invest in a white noise machine and place it on your nightstand. Remember, you'll want to select a soothing sound—don't put on heavy rock music and expect to sleep like a baby.

3. Help your partner re-position

Help your partner learn to become a side sleeper or remind them to roll over if you catch them sleeping in a position that makes their snoring worse (like on their back).

4. Encourage your partner to seek medical advice

Sometimes our loved ones need a little reminder to take care of themselves. Chronic snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, a severe condition that can lead to high blood pressure, fatigue and even heart disease. If your partner snores most nights, consult a doctor to rule out more serious problems.
